James Sprunt Awarded $2 Million Grant from Trump Administration’s Department of Economic Development

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                 JULY 9, 2018

Last week the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Wilbur Ross, announced that the Department of Economic Development Administration has awarded a $2 million dollar grant to James Sprunt Community College for a healthcare workforce training facility, which will house the associate degree nursing and licensed practical nursing programs on campus.

The grant is being awarded by the Trump Administration, which is “committed to taking action that opens new opportunities for all Americans,” said Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, adding, “The construction of the James Sprunt Community College workforce training facility will help those in the community gain the skills necessary to succeed.”

“We are elated about receiving $2 million dollars in funding to assist with building a state-of-the-art health science facility on our campus,” said Dr. Rouse Lawrence, President of James Sprunt community college. “The facility will be instrumental in properly training medical professionals in the healthcare sector and will benefit our students and employers in this region for years to come.”

The construction of this new facility will provide James Sprunt Community College with a greater capacity to train individuals. The building is estimated to have a net area of 18,184 and a gross area of 30,307 and will be built adjacent to the Hoffler Building on the east side of campus. The new building will be a 2-story facility with up-to-date classroom space featuring laboratory settings and clinical space to give students realistic training during their studies at James Sprunt.

The building will be paid for not only with this grant received from the U.S. Department of Commerce, but also with monies received through the Connect NC bond referendum passed in 2016 by North Carolina voters.

The project is expected to create more than 100 jobs through the expansion of the nursing program and bring in $12 million in private investments into Duplin County and the surrounding areas. Prior to submitting the grant to the EDA, James Sprunt had support from a number of medical facilities including Vidant, Goshen Medical, New Hanover Regional Medical Center, and Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
