KENANSVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA – Every gift matters. Every gift has the power to change lives. That is the message of the 2019 JSCC Foundation Annual Campaign, which was kicked off in March, as a way to raise money for student scholarships.

Many residents in Duplin County may have already received an annual giving packet.

“The need for financial assistance at James Sprunt Community College is great,” said Dr. Stan Turbeville, vice president of college advancement and executive director of the JSCC Foundation. “Every semester we see students struggling to find money to pay not only for tuition, but for books, equipment, and living expenses.”

As a community college, James Sprunt has an open door policy and admits students from all walks of life. Many of our students at James Sprunt experience food-insecurities, homelessness, and unemployment.

This past year has been extremely difficult for students at the college due to the devastating effects of Hurricane Florence and Tropical Storm Michael. Many students became displaced and many lost all that they had. Many students are still struggling to get back to some sense of normalcy, but they continue to make every effort to come to school every day.

At James Sprunt, we have tried to alleviate many of these burdens that our students are facing, but we cannot do it alone.

It is said that one-third of all community college students are from low-income families, and one quarter of community college students are parents. Financial instability tends to be the primary reason students stop attending college.

With scholarships, James Sprunt Community College hopes to be able to change those statistics.

The JSCC Foundation hopes this campaign will help to improve the financial stability of our students, so they can become productive citizens, achieve success and have an opportunity to pursue their hopes and dreams.

The college hopes to raise $50,000 by the end of the year and would love to have everyone in the community contribute in some way.

“No amount of giving is too small, and no amount is too big,” said Dr. Stan Turbeville, vice president of college advancement and executive director of the JSCC Foundation. “From $1 to $100,000, every single gift matters in supporting our students and achieving the mission of James Sprunt Community College.”

Those interested in giving to the annual campaign can contact the JSCC Foundation directly. Please contact Donna Springfield, the JSCC Foundation Coordinator, at (910) 275-6166 or by email at dspringfield@jamessprunt.edu.
