Column by Dr. Carraway, President of James Sprunt Community College, as published in the May 30, 2019 edition of the Duplin Times.
As I begin my second month at James Sprunt Community College, I want to thank everyone in the community for the warm welcome and to let you know that I am very excited about the future of this college.
We recently celebrated, with our students, the institution’s Fifty-Seventh Commencement. I continue to believe that our opportunities are endless and I know that James Sprunt will continue to do what is necessary to provide our students with access to these opportunities.
The JSCC Foundation has been active with the Annual Campaign and the Second Annual 5K, the Mustache Dash, from which I am still recovering. I extend a special thanks to our Student Services Division and the 5K Committee for providing leadership for this event and to all those from our community who came out to participate. It was a major win for our students, who will benefit from the money raised.
Our summer semester is off to a good start, as we have established a new record for enrollment in the history of the college with 510 students attending. This is a tremendous momentum point and we hope to continue that momentum into the fall semester. As always, our students will continue to be the focal point of all that we do at James Sprunt Community College.
James Sprunt Community College offers a true college experience.
If you are looking for a place where you are treated like family, look no further than James Sprunt Community College. We have a small-town charm that you won’t find anywhere else. It is one of the things that drew me to this college. Everyone has been so friendly and so kind to me. I know that this community is filled with good people, and I am so thankful to be a part of it.
The family atmosphere of James Sprunt fosters creativity, learning, and will help our students excel in their studies. Our highly qualified faculty are experts in their fields and I hope that you’ll take advantage of the opportunity to learn from their experience. Our staff also stands ready to assist you. We are here to serve you. If you have any questions about our programs, the application process or financial assistance, please call us or come by for a visit.
On June 17, we will be hosting an open house from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Please come out to see us, I would love to meet you! We will have several of our programs featured, allowing you to talk with faculty and staff, and also see the campus. The open house will be held in the Boyette Building, Room 113.
James Sprunt is a wonderful place to be. It is a beautiful venue to continue your education. We offer an amazing value for the residents of Duplin County and the surrounding areas. With high school students having the opportunity to attend the college tuition free through the Presidential Scholars Program, and with our tuition rates being one of the lowest in the country, James Sprunt gives individuals an opportunity to receive a quality education at an affordable price.
James Sprunt has been in the business of student success since 1964. Our education is equivalent to any four-year institution, and I would argue that it may be just a little better. Our college offers small class sizes, individual attention, and boundless opportunities to those who attend. Once a student leaves James Sprunt, they will be prepared with hands-on training, new skills, and the ability to enter the workforce.
It is my goal that soon we will offer more programs, such as HVAC and plumbing, that will help students learn a skill and be able to make a good living.
I also hope to increase the number of continuing education courses and short-term training opportunities at the college.
In North Carolina, 67% of jobs require more than a high school diploma. Earning a credential such as your CDL’s, electrician’s license, or Nurse Aide I certification, will help to increase opportunities for individuals to earn a good income for their family.
With the help of faculty, staff, and the community, we will develop a stronger workforce for Eastern North Carolina through these workforce development programs, which will surely benefit the community as a whole.
In addition to skills training, James Sprunt will continue to offer college transfer courses in which students can transfer seamlessly to any four-year institution in the UNC System. We also have transfer agreements with Lees McCrae College, University of Mount Olive, Methodist College, and NC Wesleyan University.
Once again, I am so thankful to be at James Sprunt Community College. I thank the Board of Trustees for their confidence in selecting me to lead this great institution, and I thank each of you for your support. I look forward to getting to know each one of you and to doing my part to continue to make this institution the best in the state and in the nation.
