FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                             AUGUST 13, 2019

KENANSVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA – The third class of Presidential Scholars have been announced at James Sprunt Community College. The 2019 group of Presidential Scholars are the largest number of recipients of the full-ride scholarship at James Sprunt. The college began the program in 2017.

“The Presidential Scholarship program continues to grow, and we see this as a program that benefits the community,” said Brian Jones, associate vice president of student support services at James Sprunt. “It helps many families to save money long-term.”

Presidential Scholars receive a scholarship that waives all tuition and fees at James Sprunt towards an associate degree that the student wishes to pursue. These students are selected based upon previous academic achievements demonstrated while in high school. Students must have been a graduating high school senior from a Duplin County high school, be homeschooled within Duplin County, or have graduated from Harrells Christian Academy in Harrells or Liberty Christian Academy in Richlands with a 3.0 unweighted GPA. Recipients must also have completed three James Sprunt classes through the North Carolina Career and College Promise Initiative, complete an admissions packet to James Sprunt, as well as the FAFSA, and an application for the scholarship.

“The students who go through the Presidential Scholarship program, they graduate, they transfer to four-year schools, they go to work, they are very quickly employed, and they have great GPA’s,” explained Brian Jones. “It is just a win-win all around, a win for James Sprunt and a win for our students, their families, and the community.”

The Presidential Scholars come from five different high schools in the area. Below are some brief bios on each student.
